Niacin (nicotinic acid) also works well but often causes flushing at higher doses. Nicotinamide raises NAD+ only briefly. For NADH and oral NAD+ there is little evidence that they are absorbed intact. Whatever you choose, pick a product with an independent lab report: testing shows many NAD+ supplements contain less than the label claims.

NAD+ boosters compared

Booster

What it is

Effect on NAD+ in humans

Things to consider

NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide)

Direct NAD+ precursor

Raises blood NAD+ dose-dependently (250–1,000 mg/day); roughly doubles after 14 days at 1 g/day

Well tolerated in studies of up to several months; largely converted via gut bacteria

NR (nicotinamide riboside)

Vitamin B3 form, precursor of NMN

Raises blood NAD+ similarly to or somewhat more than NMN

Well studied; market testing often finds less than labelled

Niacin (nicotinic acid)

Classic vitamin B3

Strong increase in blood NAD+ in clinical studies

Flushing (redness, warmth, itching) at higher doses; liver strain at high doses

Nicotinamide (niacinamide)

Vitamin B3 form

Short, temporary increase (hours)

Cheap and well tolerated; effect does not last

NADH

Reduced form of NAD

Little evidence that oral NADH is absorbed intact

Small studies, mostly on fatigue; low quality of evidence

NAD+ (oral)

The end product itself

Largely broken down in the gut into smaller precursors

In testing, many products contained hardly any NAD+

NMN vs NR: what do head-to-head studies show?

Christen et al., Nature Metabolism 2026: 65 healthy adults took 1 g NR, 1 g NMN, 0.5 g nicotinamide or placebo for 14 days. NR and NMN roughly doubled blood NAD+, with no significant difference between them. Nicotinamide gave only a short peak. Notably, NR and NMN were mainly converted by gut bacteria into nicotinic acid, which the body then uses to make NAD+.

Berven et al., iScience 2026: in a small study (1,200 mg/day), NR raised blood NAD+ about 2.3 times more than NMN. After four weeks NAD+ also rose in the brain, by about 35% in healthy participants.

Bottom line: both NMN and NR reliably raise NAD+. Whether one is better has not been settled; the studies are small and differ in design. After ingestion they are largely broken down in the gut into smaller building blocks such as nicotinamide, NMN and NR. Few human studies show that oral NAD+ or NADH raises cellular NAD+ better than the precursors themselves. A 2023 systematic review (American Journal of Physiology – Endocrinology and Metabolism) concluded that evidence for NAD+ administration across conditions is limited and of mixed quality. NAD+ infusions do raise levels directly, but they are expensive, take hours and have barely been studied for long-term effects.

Which NAD+ supplements are independently tested and safe?

The biggest risk with NAD+ boosters is not the compound itself but product quality. ConsumerLab has reported several analyses in which popular supplements disappointed:

In 2021, 14 of the 22 most popular NMN supplements on Amazon contained no detectable NMN.

In 2025, many popular NAD+ supplements were found to contain hardly any NAD+.

In 2026, only 26 of 70 NR supplements tested were close to their label claim.

How to check a NAD+ supplement:

Ask for a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) from an independent lab, not just the manufacturer.

Check purity by HPLC: for NMN, ≥99% is standard for good products.

Look for testing on heavy metals and microbiology.

Make sure the batch number on the report matches your package.

Be wary of extremely low prices per gram.

More in Checking NMN certificates: what should you look for?

Which NAD+ booster suits you?

You want the best-studied option: NMN or NR, 250–1,000 mg per day.

You want the cheapest option: niacin or nicotinamide, with the caveats above.

You are considering NADH or oral NAD+: the evidence is weak; a precursor makes more sense.

You take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding: talk to a doctor first.

Every Day Better NMN – ≥99.5% pure, independently tested and shipped from the Netherlands. View the certificates.

NMN Capsules 120 × 250 mg – €89

NMN Powder 30 gram – €54

Frequently asked questions

What is the best NAD+ booster?

Based on human studies, NMN and NR are the best-studied NAD+ boosters. Both roughly double blood NAD+. There is no convincing evidence yet that one is clearly better.

Is NMN or NAD+ better?

Oral NAD+ is largely broken down in the gut before absorption. NMN is a smaller precursor with more human studies showing a rise in blood NAD+.

How fast does a supplement raise NAD+?

In studies, blood NAD+ rises gradually and plateaus after about two weeks.

Are NAD+ boosters safe?

NMN and NR were well tolerated in studies lasting weeks to months.
