Three days broke, no thanks! I don’t know about you, but over the past few years the price of a good night’s drinking has not gone down. Headaches, nausea, fatigue, a head full of cotton wool and unable to move forward for days afterwards. What a long way the easy, cozy broke days of yesteryear seemed like. Until, after my first 3 weeks of NMN use, I went out one evening with colleagues. Special beers on the terrace, some snacks for dinner and the spontaneous idea to go dancing. How could that be? What is NMN and how does it work? Back to basics for a moment.
NMN is a precursor of NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide), a crucial molecule in our body involved in numerous metabolic processes (for more info, see our Science page).
This includes breaking down alcohol.
When we drink alcohol, it is metabolized in the liver through a two-stage reaction.
First, ethanol is converted into acetaldehyde, a highly toxic substance.
Although this first step is reversible, acetaldehyde is also usually metabolized quickly.
In the second step, acetaldehyde goes to the mitochondria, where it is oxidized to acetate and water.
This process is facilitated by mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). For both steps, NAD+ is essential to provide the necessary energy for conversion, which becomes available when NAD+ is converted to [1]. Can NMN prevent hangovers? Recent research shows that NMN supplements, when taken before alcohol consumption, appear to increase liver function, helping to rid the body of alcohol (actually a poison ) more quickly and efficiently.
This could reduce the severity of your vomiting symptoms such as headaches, nausea and dizziness.
This study even showed that NMN seemed to neutralize the effects of alcohol through increased liver function, promoting the rapid removal of alcohol from the body [2]. NMN and the repair of alcohol-related damage Interestingly, NMN offers potential not only for reducing hangovers, but also for repairing alcohol-related damage.
One study examined NMN supplementation in a chronic alcohol model in mice, finding that NMN increased hepatic NAD+ levels, reduced liver damage (as indicated by plasma ALT and AST levels) and altered the expression of 25% of genes modulated by ethanol metabolism [2].
Moreover, NMN treatment restored ethanol-disrupted Erk1/2 signaling and prevented an increase in Atf3 overexpression, which has been linked to hepatic steatosis, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function and ethanol-induced metabolic syndrome [2].
Simply put, it helps the liver return to normal function and repairs some damaged parts.
